Joy of Beauty® wins SBA’s 2023 Maryland Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year for Nails & Faces of Joy, LLC dba Joy of Beauty®, a Diabetic-Friendly Body Care and Lifestyle Brand
Joy of Beauty®, a diabetic-friendly body care line, is the latest innovation of parent company, Nails & Faces of Joy, LLC. It’s Waldorf, MD-based—founded and operated by Joy A. Johnson since 2007.
The brand’s philosophy is “If a diabetic can use it we all can, including cancer fighters, new and nursing moms, elderly those with limited mobility and individuals with and without skin challenges.”
Nails & Faces of Joy, formally registered as an LLC in 2012, thrived at several brick-and-mortar beauty treatment locations in Charles County from 2009 – 2018, through which she offered special care to the diabetic and cancer communities. Johnson’s dedicated clientele also included men and women who did not identify in either of those groups. Initially it was a fully service-based beauty spa business.
With the constant help of the SBDC office in College of Southern MD in LaPlata, MD she has had the same business counselor, Mr. Bill Hitte, since taking the SBDC-sponsored business 101 class that he taught back in 2007. Johnson has been known to pivot her business as needed based on the ever-changing economy and personal and business growth. Since the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, Johnson reinvented her business into becoming an MD-certified MBE/WBE/SBE and ACDBE firm that manufactures her vegan, cruelty-free, toxin-free, no artificial dyes, non-artificial fragrances brand, made in the USA.
Johnson is a primary caregiver, along with her twin sisters, for her 92-year-old grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s and dementia. She’s also raising her two children with her soulmate, Damion. She is the author of JOY, the KEY to Entrepreneurial Happiness, and a renowned beauty industry expert in the Washington, DC, Metropolitan area. Johnson is a multi-licensed beauty professional, former adjunct professor, international beauty educator, and product developer.
She is a global educator and Licensed Nail Technician specializing in Diabetic Pedicures and a Licensed Esthetician. She has lectured domestically and internationally, engaging, and informing small and large crowds for the last 13 years. Her consulting and teaching have taken her to the E.U. and throughout North America.
In July 2022, her company vended at Cosmoprof North America, the leading B2B beauty trade show in the Americas, and her Poppyseed & Kokum Whipped Body Butter Scrub won an Innovation product category award for the Cosmo Trends Report for 2022—exclusively curated by Beauty Streams. At the same tradeshow she garnered second place in the Cosmoprof x Glosswire Pitch Competition.
Johnson is considering a Charles County manufacturing facility (bolstering our local community), initiate a 501(c)3 charitable nonprofit, christened Survive & Thrive to render free monthly beauty services to cancer fighters, support caretakers with resources and honoring the legacy of her late mother, Joyce Norris, who battled metastasized breast cancer. Her next direction is to expand the brand globally, all with the help of her trusted SBDC counselor, Bill Hitte, and all the resources available within the network of SBDC/SBA, Charles County Economic Development Dept., and the Maryland Dept of Commerce.
The award presentation will take place during the 2023 Maryland Small Business Week Awards Luncheon on Thursday, June 8th, 2023 at Martin’s West in Woodlawn, Md. This is a spectacular event that celebrates the achievement of Maryland’s outstanding entrepreneurs and small business advocates.
